Geeta's Garden

I was fortunate to meet my client, Geeta, through a chance encounter. We sat next to each other on the subway while I was on the way to a class at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. She asked me if I could help push her yard in a more low-maintenance, water-efficient direction. Final deliverables include hand-drawn perspective and plan drawings, plant list, and bloom chart.

Front Yard

During the hot Virginia summer, the grass burns and becomes yellow. It's high-maintenance and an eyesore. This proposal reduces the amount of lawn, which reduces the amount of water and maintenance from Geeta. It echoes the backyard faux-creek, and introduces small hills (also known as berms) covered in ornamental grasses, creating a miniature of the nearby James River as it winds through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Back Yard

Now that Geeta's children are grown up, the needs of the backyard have changed. I was inspired by my research on a trip to Phoenix to incorporate a xeriscaped faux-creek, that builds on the original design to create a sense of enclosure for the back patio.

Inspiration

I combined the natural landmarks and shapes of the Lynchburg area with water-saving strategies I studied in Phoenix, Arizona.
